Taxi increase

Friday, 31 October 2008 09:12 by Mark

Taxi fares are going up by 8% from tonight. So if you get a taxi home late tonight don't take it out on the driver if your fare is higher than usual. Also for those that intend soiling the vehicle, be aware that the surcharge for this is now 140, up by 15 compared to if you soiled it earlier in the year.

I can only imagine what an airport run combined with a good old soiling will now cost!

Nocturnal petrol prices

Wednesday, 29 October 2008 08:34 by Mark

Great to see some price innovation coming from the petrol pumps, with the Irish Times Motoring reporting that a Carlow Maxol station has started to reduce their fuel prices at night. This is offering the motorist a cheaper option as well as improving footfall and business in the forecourt when traditionally things would be slow for them. Hopefully this will extend to other petrol stations across the country.

Save cash and reduce your carbon footprint

Tuesday, 28 October 2008 09:20 by Mark

In the same way as us humans benefit from a good old dettox every so often, your car engine can also do with a bit of TLC from time to time, especially with the cold weather coming in. Deposits can build up in the car, causing problems like loss in power, rough acceleration, exhaust smoke or high fuel consumption. This product above, DTOX400M is designed to improve the performance of your engine, lower your emissions and save some cash on fuel bills. The one above is for PETROL cars ONLY, but we'll have one for diesel cars shortly. It cleans out the fuel injectors, intake vales, valve seats and fuel lines. All you do is pop it in next you're filling up the car.

One of the lads here has used it in his car, which was acting a bit sluggish. He noticed a definite improvement after a couple of weeks and he reckons he is getting about 80 - 100 extra kilometres on a full tank of petrol.

Overall this year new car sales are down 17%. Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Opel and Nissan remain the most popular brands among buyers. Land speed record attempt

Thursday, 23 October 2008 08:29 by Mark

Sky News reports today that a British team is building a car that will aim to drive more than 1000mph. The record attempt will happen in 2011. The current world record is 763mph set in 1997. The car has been christened 'Bloodhound', although 'Greyhound' would probably be a better choice. You can follow their progress on their website and you can even donate money for the project.

The Filter is also working on a world land speed record attempt. Hopefully we'll break the record with our own cutting-edge design. And we don't need any donations...

Brilliant!

Wednesday, 22 October 2008 10:22 by Mark

Here's something that everybody working in the auto industry should have. It's a desk in the shape of a mini. Brilliant! It features in the Irish Times Motoring Gadgets section today. Great product but it's €3,200! It's made with a real mini, but for that price i'd want to be able to drive home in it also...

Motorbike Taxis

Wednesday, 22 October 2008 04:38 by Mark

The Irish Times Motoring today has an interesting piece on motorbike taxis in Paris, which journalist Conor Twomey explains are a highly effective way to get across the city in rush hour traffic. Currently used mostly by wealthy executives (its not cheap - 35euro minimum), the motorbike cab has actually been available in Paris since 2000. And you get to travel in style - Conor Twomey travels (pic below) on a Honda Gold Wing. Traffic in Paris is almost as bad as in Dublin - so could we see a motorbike taxi soon in Ireland??

Online fraud – don’t be a victim

Friday, 17 October 2008 09:16 by Mark

We received an e-mail from a pastor looking for a bonnet to be shipped to an orphanage in a foreign land. It’s amazing how expensive car parts seem to be over there! As an eCommerce retailer and as a consumer, we have to constantly look out for dishonest folk who are trying to defraud. Luckily for us these ingenious thieves usually use a similar modus operandi. We recently consulted with some of the world’s leading criminal psychologists in order to create a criminal profile of the online fraudster in the hope of solving international internet fraud forever. Here’s what we all came up with:

1.                  The online fraudster will often introduce themselves as members of the clergy, frequently as ‘pastors’. This immediately raises suspicion as the last pastor I ever saw was a travelling pastor who appeared in an episode of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ - and he turned out to be dodgy too.  They can be disguised as priests, bishops, cardinals, preachers, spiritual advisors etc. - so do not be fooled by their wicked deception. I actually feel sorry for legitimate members of the clergy who may be trying to purchase items online, with no success. But at least they will forgive.

2.                  They frequently pretend to work in orphanages or other charitable homes / institutions for the underprivileged. In our case, the Fiat Ducato radiator that they URGENTLY require will often be required for their orphanage bus or the Sat Nav may be essential in guiding hundreds of children from impending poverty. They will often try and give you more money than the advertised product price - for God's sake man save it for the orphanage!

3.                  They often have an existing relationship with a freight or logistics company, so they won’t require you to ship the product as they will make the necessary shipping arrangements. Why would a pastor have so many connections in the logistics trade? Just how much communion are these pastors shipping around the world???

4.                  Their stories may often parallel the plots of Dynasty or Dallas. They will belong to a dysfunctional family which has recently suffered an untimely and suspicious death. They are the sole benefactor of the dead person’s will, but are aware that their siblings are trying to defraud them of their inheritance. They will need your immediate help to transfer the millions of dollars safely out of their country. Don’t be fooled.   Frequently they may require a trustworthy business such as yours in which to transfer vast amounts of money. These figures would be some way believable if they were in the thousands, but when they approaches you with a bank transfer of $30,000,000 you can be fairly confident that something isn’t quite right.

5.                  They will often address you in an over the top manner. They will use expressions such as ‘God Almighty Bless You’, ‘Thousands of Kisses Upon You and Your Wonderful Family’ or some other ridiculous expression of love. For us Irish, not used to expressing emotion until at least 10 pints of porter have been consumed,  this is particularly disconcerting. They will say that they know you are a ‘Trustworthy and Heavenly Person’, although they have never met you. Do not be fooled by their false affection. You can be guaranteed once they get your cash you will receive no Christmas cards from these tricksters.

So there you have it - a fool-proof way to spot cunning thieves who lurk around the internet superhighway trying to rip people off.

Build an Engine Challenge

Thursday, 16 October 2008 04:44 by Mark

The Haynes Internal Combustion Engine was featured in the Irish Times Motoring yesterday. While we're hesitant to mention the 'Christmas' word in October, this is truly a brilliant present.

Whether you're an adult who wants to learn more about how an engine works, a parent looking to show your kids or just a petrol head who wants a bit of a challenge, the Haynes Build Your Own Engine is the best invention since mechano. It allows you to build a four stroke engine from scratch. The Haynes Engine includes light and sound features, spark plugs that actually function and light up, moving pistons and a fan belt. It's the type of thing you can imagine sitting down with/without the kids (ten year old upwards) to get stuck into on Christmas day, munching on the Roses with a couple of beers (not the kids obviously) - the perfect way for a grown man to relive the old feeling of Christmas past.

The Irish Times called it the "ultimate gift for a budding petrolhead". Mick in here built it a few months ago - Proud as punch he was! So if you're brave enough to take the Haynes Build Your Own Engine Challenge, GET BUILDING…

Budget scandal

Wednesday, 15 October 2008 09:13 by Mark

This is our outraged face.

  • Duty on petrol to rise by 8 cents a litre from midnight
  • For cars with engines over 2.5 litres and in CO2 bands E, F and G, motor tax is to rise 5%
  • Motor tax up 4% for engines below the 2.5 litre threshold and CO2 bands A to D
  • Levy of €200 on employees for car parking in major urban areas

As if things weren't bad enough for us poor motorists.

However all is not lost, we have a money saving tip for you.

Separate Your Two Ply Toilet Paper. The trick is to have empty toilet paper rolls to split the 2 ply onto. The process should go significantly faster by putting the 2 ply roll onto the toilet paper holder and winding each ply onto the empty cardboard rolls, which have a stick or pencil through it to make it easy to roll.

Eddie Hobbs eat your heart out…
