Car roof boxes

Thursday, 8 July 2010 09:06 by Mark

A brief look at some of our best selling car roofboxes in Ireland. A car roof box is used for transporting items in your car that you dont have the room to fit in the boot. Roofboxes are most popular with families with young children - with buggies and extra clothes. Probably the best known roof-box is a Thule roofbox or a Hapro roof box, but here we will have a look at some of most popular car roofboxes.

Arjes 480

The Arjes 480 was our best selling roof box in 2009, largely down to the extremely competitive price of €239 for a large roof box. The Arjes is an economy roof box, but it has the look of a more expensive box. With a nice black metallic finish and aerodynamic design, it looks really well on the vehicle. The Arjes opens / closes on one side only, so while it is possible to fit this box onto jeeps and MPVs, it is not as suitable for these vehicles as our double-side opening boxes such as the Hapro Carver 6.5 below.

The fitting system is not as advanced as the Hapro Carver boxes, and the Arjes 480 roof box comes with a one year warranty versus the five year warranty on the Hapro equivalent. The Arjes is a great option for somebody with a saloon vehicle who is looking for a good size roof box which might be used a couple of times a year.

The Hapro Carver 6.5

The Hapro Carver 6.5 is the real deal in terms of a roof box. It comes with all the features that make it a premium quality roof box. The double-side opening makes it easy to fit on any vehicle, even jeeps and MPVs. It is also very useful when you need to access your items in the roof box and especially if you’re travelling on the continent, as you wont have to be standing out on the roadside when accessing the roof box. It also has an easy fit system which allows you to put it on and off the car in a matter of minutes without any nuts or washers.

The Carver 6.5 is as sturdy a roof box as you can get. The hinges are very strong and it incorporates twin full-length steel reinforcement rails for extra strength. This box comes with a five year warranty and the reason a five year warranty can be offered on this roof box is that things rarely go wrong with them. It’s a good size roof box with 430 litres of space and is very similar in size to the Arjes 480 roof box. It’s a great option for those who will be getting frequent use out of a roof box.

The Hapro Roady 311

The best selling of our smaller roof boxes, The Hapro Roady 311 roof box is a great small roof box ideally suited to hatchback vehicles. At €179 it is actually cheaper than many soft roof boxes on the market. The reason that it is so suitable for hatchback cars is that this box opens from the rear so the hatchback shape means that you can open and close the box easily. It doesn’t have the easy-fit system that the Hapro Carver range comes with, but it is still very easy to fit, with just two clamps on each bar to fit onto the box. This box comes with a two year warranty.

Customer review of our Haynes Engine

Friday, 23 April 2010 08:55 by Mark

One of our recent Free Friday competition winners was Hilary Weldon, who won a 'Haynes Build your Own Engine' which she gave to her son Robert. Robert kindly agreed to give us a short review and photo on how he got on with building the Haynes engine. Thank you Hilary and Robert from all at MicksGarage!

Roberts Review:

I built the Internal Combustion Engine in an afternoon. Whilst most of the instructions were self explanatory I found difficulty with instruction 4.It was misleading but after careful study I overcame the difficulty. Otherwise I got through it fine. I was delighted when I’d finished and to see the engine running was a great thrill.

Anyone that visits and sees the engine running is quite impressed. Great fun, I was quite thrilled that I could finish it.

Car Roof Box season starts early

Thursday, 8 April 2010 08:50 by Mark

We're witnessing an early start this year to the roof box season in Ireland. Based on the activity on our website so far, more peoople than ever will be holidaying with their cars this year. The mild weather has certainly helped in terms of roofbox sales. And the weekend is forecast to be sunny also, so hopefully we have a good summer on the way! At MicksGarage we've got a good range of car roof boxes suitable for every make and model of car - rear opening roof boxers for smaller hatchback cars; double-side opening for the taller vehicles, MPVs and jeeps; and the standard one-side opening roof box.

And remember, a roof box is for life, not just for one summer - so choose carefully and think of your future needs. You may just have one bouncing bambino at the moment but if you intend on extending the family, a larger roof box might be a better option. We offer free fitting on roof boxes although it's only a 5 minute job if you want to go it alone. Happy shopping!

Demise of the Hummer

Friday, 26 February 2010 10:13 by Mark

The Hummer is no more.

No harm either. Gas guzzling monster that it was. Nobody has got the cash for them anymore anyway. Another victim of the economic collapse...

Bluetooth phone kit

Wednesday, 27 May 2009 08:07 by Mark

I'm currently road-testing a new product. It's called the Seecode Vossor and it's a bluethooth car phone device that also acts as a rear view mirror, i.e. this device clips on over your existing rear view mirror and acts a bluetooth hands-free phone kit.

Let me start off by saying that for the most part, I am a bit of a techno-phobe. Working in an eCommerce company I shouldn't admit to this but I generally don't enjoy spending hours reading through complicated manuals to try to configure products. Luckily the Seecode Vossor doesn't require this. It was the easiest techie product I have ever come across. Since the mobile phone driving ban I have been meaning to get the car kitted out so that I could make calls again, so when I came across Seecode as a potential product we would stock, I decided to get one myself and give it a thorough test - it's not good to sell a product to customers if you're not happy that it works well! The device requires an initial charge, before you hook your phone up to it (all incredibly straight-forward) and transfer your phonebook over (it takes up to 600 contacts and numbers).

Then off out to the car and clip it on over your existing mirror. Now it takes a bit of pressure to get it on, which isn't a bad thing as it means it certainly wont come off too easily. The beauty of htis product is that there are no cables hanging out of it, it is entirely wireless. When you're about to head off on your journey, you just switch the device on, it recognises and hooks into your mobile phone (note my technical jargon!) and then you're ready for action. Sop your first call comes through, you hear it ringing from the mirror (the speakers are positioned well, reception is top class), you see the number on the mirror glass, and then the name of the person appears on the mirror glass also (through the integrated LCD display) - brilliant. It comes with a redial function, speed-dial for your most popular friends and voice dial (my phone doesn't have that though!) . Then when you need to make a call you just press through to your phonebook on the mirror, and hit the green call button. The clarity of the calls have been excellent to date. The battery lasts for ages, before it needs recharging. Now this is the one snag with it, it doesn't come with a mains charger so needs to be charged in the car. But you can buy a car / mains adaptor for a few euro and work away charging it at home.

The thing I also like about it is that it just blends in as a rear view mirror, you have to point it out to passengers in the car before they notice it. So for light-fingered thieves looking for a Sat Nav or handsfree phone kit to steal, they probably wont notice it either.

Anyway, i'm very impressed with it. It's a practical solution to making calls without distracting your attention too much away from your driving. We're all used to looking into the rear view mirror and then back onto the road, so it's a natural driving accessory which doesn't impact on your driving. It's non obtrusive and it works very well. So it's a thumbs up for Seecode, and you can keep an eye on our website to see it available for sale soon.

product demos

Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:34 by Mark

We did some research pre Christmas and asked our customers what we could do better on the website. The main point that came across is that internet shoppers want to see as many product images as possible, detailed descriptions, clear and comprehensive information - basically getting as close to touching the product as you can in an online world. So we've started to rectify things a bit. We're getting more (and better) product images up on the site and we've also started to do weekly video product demonstrations.

While we are far from Steven Spielberg, we hope that our demos may help customers to see how certain products work and how they are fitted. So next time you see a product on the site and you're not quite sure exactly what it consists of or how it works,  look for the video camera symbol below to see if we've got a demo on it. We've already done one for our armrests, replacement mirror glass, emergency kits and bulb kits.
